The annual International Arts Carnival is a five-week-long programme of stage shows that add a bright splash of culture into the school holidays. Judd Boaz checks out the highlights 

The International Arts Carnival hits venues all over the city this summer from Friday July 11 until Sunday August 17, bringing with it world class entertainment in the form of music, drama, acrobatics, multimedia and magic. The carnival features performers from countries as far afield as France, Portugal, Canada and Croatia, and there’s a roster of interactive workshops for adventurous kids and their parents to get involved with. Here are some of the highlights to look out for...

Musical Magic: The Classic Buskers and Neil Henry


An ingenious mix of comedy and magic show, The Classic Buskers and UK magician Neil Henry create a witty, magical musical that is sure to delight. They’re also holding magic classes on Thursday July 24, so be sure to book your tickets early. Various locations inc Hong Kong City Hall Theatre, 5 Edinburgh Pl, Central, $120-80. Timber!


The Cirque Alfonse circus company was born in Quebec and now brings its original, action packed production, Timber! to HK. The death-defying troupe juggle with axes and do somersaults across sharp log saws. And as if that’s not enough to convince you, there’s even a bungee jumping granddad. Gala Show: The Best of Black Light Theatre


The Black Light Theatre Srnec from Prague uses pioneering theatre technology to make its black-clad performers seem invisible in this black light theatre performance. The resulting show involves animated laundry fights and dancing lamp posts, fused with classical ballet and modern dance. Auditorium, Kwai Tsing Theatre, 12 Hing Ning Rd, Kwai Chung, $240-120. Show Me Once


Fantasy Puppet Theatre tells the story of a man who sells his business to take his young son on a globetrotting adventure before his son succumbs to a rare blinding disease. Adapted from a true story, the production uses contemporary shadow play and puppetry. Various locations inc Sha Tin Town Hall, 1 Yuen Wo Rd, Sha Tin, $160, $140. (Ages 5+), Jul 18-20 & Aug 2-3

L’Après Midi d’un Foehn


Crafting a unique twist on classical music and ballet, French company Non Nova’s show combines piles of colourful plastic bags with the strains of Debussy’s Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun and some carefully placed fans. The effect is, quite literally, a rubbish ballet, with bags billowing and dancing rhythmically along in time to the music. Black Box Theatre, Kwai Tsing Theatre. 12 Hing Ning Rd, Kwai Fong; $160. Fantastic Gods and Spirits of China


This show brings audiences right into the heart of China’s celestial wonderland, using music, drama and narration to showcase a journey through Chinese folklore. Starring in the show are both the Hong Kong Children’s Choir and some young, talented singers recruited in open auditions. Concert Hall, Hong Kong Cultural Centre, 10 Salisbury Rd; 8pm, $300-100. International Children’s Film Carnival

International feature films, animations and documentaries are presented alongside classic kids films in an event for the whole family. Various locations; $55 (adult), $28 (concession). (All ages) Jul 11-Aug 18

Fluff

An Australian trio perform a warm-hearted musical show about collecting forgotten toys. Various locations; $220-120. (Ages 3+) Jul 17-20
