Rock out for charity

Back and better than ever, Shelter Skelter 2016 is representing the different kinds of music that the local scene has to offer. Featuring only Hong Kong born and bred bands, this is one of the best showcases of talent in our community. Even better, there’s a charitable component with all proceeds going to ShelterBox, who provide emergency shelter and supplies to areas suffering humanitarian crises.

Over two days, 11 local bands are strutting their stuff at the AIA European Carnival at the Central Harbourfront, of which Shelter Skelter is a part. It all kicks off with nine-piece Afrocubano jazz group Banda Orbita. A familiar name for those who can remember their electric performance at Clockenflap 2013, their Carlos Santana-esque style and stage presence produces the same booty-shaking outcome as the legendary guitarist. If rock ‘n’ roll is more to your liking, the acts following Banda Orbita progressively increase the head banging. Teenage Riot, increasingly active since the release of The Revenge EP in July, make feet tapping an involuntary response with their synth-tinged soft rock and groovy basslines. Following them is Shotgun Politics, whose 90s-style alternative sound – like a mix of Matchbox 20 and Yellowcard – has proved enduringly popular these last six years. Ending the night are League of Gentlemen, a straight-up rock band with riffs reminiscent of Dire Straits that makes them a treat for nostalgics.

The second day is lighter on musical acts, but is not short of entertainment. Local Cantopunk rockers Milk Shake 7 hit the stage early courtesy of their high tempo songs and a Chinese Blink 182-ish persona. They then hand the ball over to an outfit slightly different. After-After-Party might be known for an authentic punk sound that revisits The Dead Kennedys, but their live sets are always accompanied with doses of comedy that keep the mood fun. After all that rock, Site Access end the night with an all-out funk session.

Entry to Shelter Skelter is inclusive with a ticket for the AIA carnival, so make a day of it. A day at the carnival and a night with music and beer – what else do you need for a better weekend? Krshna Moriani
