Taiwanese diva supreme

With her voice, looks and killer dance moves, Jolin Tsai is the definition of a triple threat. Hailing from neighbouring Taiwan, Tsai has been called Asia’s answer to Madonna. Such a comparison is hard to live up to, but as one of Taiwan’s most successful artists of all time, with sales in excess of 20 million albums, Tsai is deserving of such praise.

In addition to the comparisons to the Queen of Pop, the Taiwanese songstress is often compared to the likes of Lady Gaga, for their similar love of over the top fashion choices and ever changing public image. Style icon that she is, it’s Tsai’s friendly attitude and strong commercial appeal that has kept her reigning supreme in the Mando music scene.

Born in Xinzhuang outside of Taipei, Tsai started her professional career at the age of 18 and was promoted under an ‘innocent girl’ image. Originally sticking to slow ballads and more upbeat pop tunes, it was Tsai’s transformation into a dance diva with sex appeal that pushed her towards more stratospheric success.
After a five-year hiatus from touring, Tsai is back on the road to plug her most recent album, Play. (Not that the 2014 release needs much help, what with it being that year’s best selling album by a female artist in Taiwan). Tsai’s  shows always demonstrate a winning combination of virtually non-stop high energy dance music, singalong pop ballads and hits. But for this tour, Tsai is working with dance crews from all over the world, as well as award-winning choreographers – who have previously collaborated with the likes of Michael Jackson and G-Dragon – to help perfect her moves. With such a heavyweight team working behind the scenes, not to mention the exhilarating stage production and special effects, the occasion ought to be one hell of a show.
