The best purple potato desserts in Hong Kong


High in antioxidants and anthocyanins, purple potato has been gaining popularity of late. Not quite so healthy when it’s a dessert but tasty nonetheless, Lisa Cam picks the best spots to put more purple in your diet


An abbreviation for ‘make your own coffee’, MYOC claims to have a hundred different coffee combinations. Known for all its different cups of joe, the desserts are also a major attraction at this petit café. The purple potato pancake is a winner that is topped with bananas, walnuts and – you guessed it – oodles of purple potato. Artisan Room

This coffee shop combines finely crafted drinks – whether coffee, organic tea or juice – with environs to inspire and relax. Specialising in éclairs, this recent addition to Western District offers an interesting purple potato variety of the pastry. Seoulmate Café

Perched on the slopes of Sai Ying Pun, this Korean fusion café is an ideal place to unwind. On the menu is a purple potato sandwich, which has the delicious ingredient mashed between two slices of toast and topped with ice cream and almond shavings – this is worth going nuts for. $63. 83 Third St, Sai Ying Pun, 2104 6788;

Café Bauhinia

This cute spot is a florist and coffee shop in one; quaint and quiet in equal measure. While you breathe in the fragrance of both flora and fresh brew, you can also stick your fork into a purple potato and chocolate tart. Haru & P

This small stall in a Kwai Fong mall delights customers with 22cm-long waffles that comes in various flavours, such as green tea and chocolate banana. Other items that comes with many innovative twists are the croissants – most notably the purple potato and pineapple option. This popular chain from Okinawa has locations dotted all over the city and is famous for its cute logo and fried bread snacks. Alongside options such as mango, chocolate, black sesame and purple potato available, there are also other savoury items on the menu to help balance out the meal. $25. Head to Mong Kok for this melt-your-heart delight. The purple potato cheese tart is baked only when ordered, so the puff pastry shell is warm and crisp when served.
