Style Tips: Swinging 60s

Fashion has a tendency to repeat its own past. Whether due to nostalgia or lack of innovation, every season designers riff on the vogue of previous years and decades to create their own interpretations of history. All this translates into baroque flourishes at Dolce Gabbana, 60s mod miniskirts at Marc Jacobs or 90s logo tees at Alexander Wang. This season, the carefree 60s look has made a strong reappearance on runways, with models looking like they just returned from a raucous weekend at Woodstock. Read on for some tips on how to perfect your haute hippie look…

Free Spirit
The 60s are characterised by a carefree and bohemian state of mind, and there’s no garment that epitomises ‘relaxed’ more so than the maxi dress. Opt for dresses in light and ethereal fabrics to transport you from the city to the festival without hinderance. Bell-bottomed trousers are also synonymous with the decade, so swap your skinnies for a casual pair of flared jeans.

Fifty Shades of Suede
Suede is replacing conventional leather as the autumn jacket textile of choice, with the supple hide appearing on the runways of Saint Laurent and Gucci. Jackets in earthen shades of tan and burgundy add warm colours to any ensemble. Fashion mavericks should opt for a patchwork leather jacket to make a particularly noticeable statement.

Mix and Match
Eclectic is the key word this season, as designers embrace a mix of prints and textures that may not seem complimentary but produce serendipitous results. Draw inspiration from a range of cultures and generations and layer on silky fabrics in an array of retro patterns, be they Japanese obi designs or vivid florals. Maybe it’s time to make a trip to the thrift shop?
