Style Tips with Emily Cheng: Festive fancy

As much as I’m a strict practitioner of austere, monochromatic dressing, the holiday season is the one time of the year that even I might break out some colour and shine. With Christmas packed full of office parties and New Year’s Eve shindigs, there’s no excuse not to bring your most ostentatious and fabulous self out of the closet. For 2016, Time Out’s resolution is to start the new year in style – read on for tips on how to perfect the look…

High shine
Designers across the board showed great affection for sparkle this season, from the generous use of lurex at Christopher Kane to the smattering of sequins at Bottega Veneta. Keep your outfit classy with a metallic shift dress that’s sleek rather than showy, or a sequined piece in dark tones that’ll light up your new year. Stick to simple silhouettes and let your statement fabrics speak for themselves.

Slip into the new year
One of the most popular silhouettes of 2015 was the slip dress. Its minimal yet suggestive form is an appropriate outfit for that evening occasion when you bid a fond adieu to the departing year. Pick a dress with a high-cut slit for the ultimate sex appeal, or layer it over trousers for a cosy but modern and fashion-forward look.

Tactile textures
Looking to get your midnight kiss this New Year’s Eve? Get prepared with ensembles in the most tactile textures to provide your lover an excuse to get touchy-feely. If your taste is more classic, go for a full-length dress in elegant velvet to sweep up those suitors. For the more adventurous, experiment with separates in high-gloss PVC to sex up the holiday season.
